The Žebrák Castle, founded in the 13th century, is a part of the largest Czech castle compound, formed together with the later Točník Castle. In the course of centuries, the originally noble mansion transformed into a royal residence, the importance of which was confirmed also by Emperor Charles IV. However, it was not until the reign of King Wencelsas IV who had the castle expensively reconstructed when Žebrák became one of the most pretentious royal residences in the country. Two fires in the 16th century were fatal for the castle. It dilapidated afterwards and the destruction was completed by treasure hunters who believed that the castle was hiding property of former kings.
